Chicago: US Vice President Kamala Harris received an overwhelming welcome as she took the stage on the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Delivering the keynote address, she today formally accepted the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nomination to fight against her Republican rival Donald Trump.

“Let’s get to work… We have a lot to do,” Harris urged the enthusiastic crowd, which responded with chants of “Kamala!” and “USA!”

Harris emerged as the Democratic nominee just over a month ago after President Joe Biden, 81, was encouraged by his allies to step aside from the race. If elected, Harris would make history as the first woman to become President of the United States.

Her speech in Chicago culminated eight intense weeks in American politics, highlighting a dramatic shift in the Democratic landscape just 75 days before the election. Initially, Democratic leaders had voiced concerns over Biden’s viability after a challenging debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump. Now, they celebrated the historic significance of Harris’ candidacy and felt a renewed sense of optimism for November’s election.

The four-day convention featured appearances from major political figures and entertainment icons. According to TMZ, superstar Beyoncé is expected to perform on Thursday, though this has not been officially confirmed.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a close Harris ally, spoke before her, emphasizing her broad appeal. “We have a tough battle ahead. And Kamala Harris is exactly the fighter we need. She will stand by you until the very end. And when Kamala fights, we all win,” Cooper declared.

A White House spokesperson revealed that Biden called Harris to wish her well before her speech.
